Boise State overwhelms San Jose State

NCAA Football Betting Lines

11/03/2007 - Boise, ID (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Taylor Tharp completed 28-of-35 passes for 259 yards, with three touchdowns and an interception, and 21st-ranked Boise State routed San Jose State, 42-7.

Jeremy Avery gained 56 yards on seven rushes with a score, and Ian Johnson returned for the Broncos (8-1, 5-0 WAC) and rushed for two touchdowns. Austin Pettis had seven grabs for 56 yards and two touchdowns for Boise State, which has won seven straight after suffering its only loss of the season, 24-10 to Washington on Sept. 8.

Adam Tafralis completed 11-of-19 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown for San Jose State (3-6, 2-3), which has dropped three in a row after winning three straight. Kevin Jurovich's four-yard touchdown catch was the only highlight for the Spartans offense, which managed only 198 yards on the game, to the 434 that the Broncos gained.

Boise State used a trick punt return to get great field position on its first possession of the second half. Marty Tadman fielded the punt from San Jose State at his own 46-yard-line, ran to the right, then turned and threw across the field to Orlando Scandrick, who raced 38 yards to the Spartans 16. Johnson capitalized on the great special teams play, pounding into the end zone from one yard out to put the Broncos ahead 28-7 with 11:11 left in the third quarter.

Tadman had a great return the conventional way later in the quarter, taking a punt back 48 yards to the San Jose State 16. Again the Broncos turned great field position into a touchdown, this time a five-yard touchdown pass from Tharp to Pettis, and Boise State led 35-7.

Boise State added to its lead early in the fourth quarter. Johnson ran over right tackle and in from two yards out, pushing the Broncos lead to 42-7 with 10:05 left.

The Broncos marched 84 yards on 12 plays on the game's opening drive, looking to set the tone early, but Titus Young, after catching a pass over the middle at the San Jose State one-yard-line, fumbled just short of the end zone while stretching for the goal line.

Avery broke through for a 37-yard scoring run early in the second quarter on a direct snap, putting the Broncos on top.

Tharp went to the air for the next Broncos TD, a 44-yard strike over the middle of the field to Ryan Putnam, and Boise State led 14-0 with 7:17 remaining in the half.

A Boise State pass interference penalty wiped off a Tadman interception, and kept alive a San Jose State drive. The Spartans capitalized, as Tafralis hit Jurovich for a four-yard scoring toss, cutting the deficit in half with 1:29 to play in the half.

Austin Smith returned the ensuing kickoff 55 yards, setting the Broncos up at the San Jose State 34-yard-line. Tharp marched Boise State right down the field, hitting Pettis for a 12-yard touchdown pass, and boosted the Broncos lead to 21-7 with just 34 seconds left before halftime.

Brandon Roy Favorite to Win 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year

Portland TrailBlazer’s guard, Brandon Roy, is MySportsbook.com’s overwhelming favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year odds.

Despite missing 20 games due to an injury earlier this season, Roy has definitely put up the best numbers of his 1st year peers. In 32 games, Roy is averaging 15.3 PPG, 4.2 boards and 3.5 assists in over 33 minutes of play per game. While most rookies breakdown as the season progresses (see Morrison), Roy is only getting stronger as his playing time and scoring average has increased each month.

With 30 or so games left in the regular season, Roy isn’t a lock for the award by any means. Other rookies are putting together some pretty impressive campaigns and a few could give Roy a run for the award with increased playing time. Heading the list is first pick, Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors. Even though he has started only two games all season, Bargnani is averaging 10.3 PPPG while shooting 35% from deep.

Randy Foye of the Minnesota Timberwolves could be set to give Roy the best competition NBA Rookie of the Year betting lines. With the benching of Mike James, Foye looks like he could be the starter in the T-Wolves backcourt for the rest of the season. So far, Foye has averaged 9 PPG and 2.4 assists in just under 21 minutes per game. With his new role of starter, Foye’s numbers will definitely increase. In his first game as the new starting guard this past Sunday, Foye had 10 points; five rebounds and 8 assists. More importantly, he logged 34 minutes of playing time; his third highest run of the season.

Adam Morrison, of the Charlotte Bobcats, was the favorite early on in the season after averaging 15+ PPG through the first month of the season. Ever since his torrid start, Morrison’s point production has declined each month. This really isn’t surprising, considering at 6’8” he only weighs 205 lbs. Obviously he will need to hit the weights big time during the off-season in order to keep from breaking down in the future.
