Davis, Setta help Tiger-Cats hold off Eskimos

Football Betting Lines

11/04/2007 - Hamilton, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Anthony Davis rushed 14 times for 96 yards and Nick Setta kicked four field goals as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats upended the Edmonton Eskimos, 21-19, in the regular-season finale between the only two non-playoff-bound teams in the CFL.

Hamilton quarterback Richie Williams completed 9-of-19 passes for 100 yards and also rushed nine times for 54 yards while remaining turnover-free. Jo Jo Walker scored the only Tiger-Cats touchdown with a 71-yard punt return, while the Hamilton defense forced three turnovers.

Hamilton concluded the regular season 3-15, with all three of its victories coming at home.

Stefan LeFors was 15-for-22 passing for 182 yards and had a rushing touchdown for the Eskimos, but both he and backup Steven Jyles were intercepted, thwarting Edmonton scoring opportunities. Damien Anderson had 16 carries for 82 yards, and Kamau Peterson caught seven passes for 79 yards.

Edmonton, which had its postseason hopes dashed a week ago in an overtime loss to Saskatchewan, finished the season 5-12-1, and missed the playoffs for the second straight year.

Hamilton emerged from the first quarter with an 8-0 lead by sandwiching a safety in between a 38-yarder and a 53-yarder by Setta.

Warren Kean hit from 42 yards out to put the Eskimos on the board early in the second, but Setta responded with a 22-yard field goal to cap a Tiger-Cats drive and make it an 11-3 game.

Edmonton then took its only lead of the game heading into halftime behind an eight-yard touchdown scamper from LeFors and a 13-yard field goal by Kean just before the half.

Setta connected again from 38 yards early in the third quarter to put Hamilton back on top before Walker broke free from the Eskimos punt coverage for the difference-making score.

Kean hit a 17-yard field goal to cap an Eskimos drive in the fourth and make it a 21-15 game, but Edmonton managed just a safety, when Setta conceded in the end zone, and a single from Kean the rest of the way.

Game Notes

Hamilton finished the season 2-6 against Western Division foes and 3-6 at home...Edmonton safety Rob Hitchcock likely played his final regular season game against the Tiger-Cats after spending much of his CFL career in Hamilton.

Kurt Warner to start, Matt Leinart to watch

Despite the debate that's swirling , Kurt Warner will remain the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, coach Dennis Green said today. The Arizona Cardinals are the +7 point underdog at online sportsbook MySportsbook.com for this Sunday's game.

Green's comment came in a statement released by the team following an ESPN report that Green decided that rookie Matt Leinart would replace Warner as starter for Sunday's game at Atlanta.

"Generally talking about the starting lineup is not something we do," Green told the AP. "However, given the speculation that was out there we want to make it clear. We're disappointed after last week, but we still expect to be a playoff football team and we fully expect Kurt Warner to be the quarterback that leads us. That has not changed."

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.

Bet NFL Sports Lines

Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.

Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.

A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.

And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
